The Velvet Divan live from Uncle Calvin’s
Live footage from our show in August. I have the most wonderful friends. This features Drew Zaremba on clarinet, Chris McGuire on bass clarinet, Buddy Mohmed on bass, Andrew Griffith on drums, and Bruce Balmer on guitar. The beautiful banjo-ukulele was loaned to me by Phil Morris (Mr. “Spanky Ukes” himself). Thank you Phil–it was just the thing! My generous and talented friends Andy Chiles and Sharie Vance made sure we had good audio and three cameras for the shoot. More videos to follow.
THE VELVET DIVAN (music, arrangement and lyrics Lisa Markley 2015)
i am the velvet divan
rescued from the photographer’s moving sale
one hundred dollars, she let me go
i tie the room together
i am the velvet divan
deep forest green with golden undertones
my walnut frame boasting stylized flowers
i tie the room together
old dogs, wayward musicians,
poets, and frustrated lovers
straining their backs and scratching their faces
my springs break through and mar the parquet
i am the velvet divan
ninety-six years of tuck and rolled slumber
they come seeking respite they never stay long
i tie the room together…
rock stars, strung out prima-donnas
starlets and shady producers
running their lines, spilling their wines
the names i could drop were i so inclined
i tie the room together…
